I have been wondering if queer male or queer female characters are more well-represented in media so I took it upon myself to ask a few queer friends of mine their viewpoints on this subject and this is what they said. Hopefully this article will open your eyes especially if you were curious about this topic as well. I asked a couple of my friends who either, their favorite mlm (Men who love men) couple is or the mlm couple they know that has the best representation here is what one of them said. "Evan and Isak from Skam because Isak is figuring out he is gay and realizing he needs to just be himself instead of lying about who he is and needs to be open" she confines on "He wouldn't to public affection at first but after he became comfortable and realized he shouldn't give a damn about what others think of him, he started being more affectionate with Evan in public." In this conversation, there is a deep message about judgement and lack of self-acceptance which is such a strong issue with queer people today. When I asked people whether they think queer females or queer males have more/better representation in television and movies, these were some of the responses I received. "I feel like both [mlm and wlw (women who love women)] have had an equal amount from the shows I have seen. I haven't watched a ton of stuff lately but I think they are quite equal" Chris V. concludes. I think a big problem is that it all depends on what peeks our interest and what we watch, like for instance I am doing this article because I want to know what people think because in all honesty I am mostly gonna be interested in a storyline that includes a queer female because that is what I am and that is what I want to be seeing in the shows and movies I watch; my point here is I look more for shows and movies that have Wlw couples rather than ones with Mlm couples so ultimately I am gonna say Wlw have more representation because that is what I've seen most of because that is what I am interested in. I know, though, that I haven't seen many series and movies, so I am blind to many mlm AND wlw couples outside of the things I have seen so I and a lot of people really don't have much room to judge. But that doesn't mean we can't share our views, thoughts and opinions on things just because we aren't as experienced as others or know less. When I asked another friend who she thinks is better represented from the things she's watched, she said "Definitely Queer females. I think those are still more welcome than mlm which is why there is more representation of wlw on shows and stuff." Says Elliett. Now I am not gonna disagree because I have no room to and plus, like I've said, I've watched shows where I knew there would be wlw, that doesn't mean there weren't mlm, but usually the wlw characters had a bigger role. I feel like from mlm representation I have seen, the character is usually a stereotypical gay male OR they are [clearly] gay but the show doesn't dive into that character's sexuality much. Another friend or two of mine have a different view point though. When I asked them the same question, this was their response. "They tend to get more mainstream projects." An example is Love Simon and how that got a spinoff series that now has two seasons complete. (Love Victor). She also says "Now that hallmark and lifetime movies are starting to add queer characters so far I think it's all been men" now I cannot say if this information is 100% accurate or not but what I can conclude as to what she is saying is that queer men (whether they are stereotypical, whether they have a love interest, and whether their sexuality is further explored or not) they tend to be added in to projects more so than queer females. At the end of the day I think what it comes down to is in everyday television and movies, there is still a major lack of diversity that needs to change.
